Internships are a great opporutnity to really find your passion. Being open to what you learn and getting exposed to new things puts you in a position to explore many new experiences. Each organization is trying to understand the talents of their people so that they can maximize performance.

I finished my first two week rotation in the estimating department, and am one week into my rotation in the garden center. Last week was bussiness casual and air conditioning. This week is work boots and sunblock. No more hour lunches at the local lunch spots because it is too hot to eat at lunchtime at the garden center. Maryland looks a lot like Mississippi in the summertime. I know it is about ten degrees cooler here, but with the humidity I can't tell the difference. I love this job! I can spend my entire shift just telling people what to plant and how to take care of it. After just a few days I have even had some customers come back and ask for me by name. If they can't remember it they either ask for the girl from Mississippi or the one with the southern accent. When I am not talking plants I get to arrange them in the different display areas. I also had the chance to look through the grower's catalogs and place orders for the weekend sale. When those trucks arrived I felt like all of my old friends had come to see me. I was so suprised to find that my coworkers and customers were just as excited about my favorite plants as I am. This marks the half way point for my garden center rotation. I am not sure where I will end up next. The top of my wish list is residential sales.

Interning is definitely a taste of real life. I never thought I would miss the classroom, but I do. I am alone on my rotations, and I have to say I miss my team. I miss the competition, the instruction, and the feedback I received in the class room. I feel like I have been pushed off the deep end to see if I sink or swim. I am not drowning, but what I am doing is not pretty. When I catch my breath and look behind me I am so proud of how far I have come in just two weeks. Moving one thousand miles away from my comfort zone for this internship is by far the scariest thing I have ever done. I am learning so much about estimating, designing, zone seven plants and about myself. I know I am not the only one splashing around in the deep end. Am I?
